When Gray was alone again, he retreated to the gym to work off the nervous energy generated by his experiment. He ran until his lungs ached, then lifted weights until every muscle in his body was fatigued. After a hot shower, he felt ready to face the kid he’d somehow ended up tutoring.

A.J. arrived a little after four.

“Hey, man,” Gray said as he let him in. “The audition is soon. Feeling ready?”

A.J. pulled a face. “Kinda. But I’m also scared I’m going to mess it up and look stupid.”

Gray nodded. He remembered being young and concerned about image. “I can't lie,” he said. “You might. But next time, you'll learn from your mistakes. Nobody is perfect the first time around. We just get a little bit better each time.”

“Even you?” A.J. asked.

Gray laughed. “Even me. Trust me. You did not want to be there for my first audition. It was horrible. I made such a fool of myself, and then I tried to save it by making more of a fool of myself. But you know what? It wasn't the end of the world. Those people didn't want to work with me then, but years later, they did. So, even though I hope you get this role, you can try again next year if you don’t.”

“Yeah, I guess.” A.J. didn't sound convinced. “But that's, like, a long way away.

Gray sighed. He'd forgotten what it felt like to be so young that a year seemed like a lifetime. “Sure, kid. I guess we have to make sure you nail it.”

A.J. got the script out of his bag, and he and Gray ran through the lines a few times. When Gray was confident that A.J. knew the words, he took the sheets of paper from him.

“What are you doing?” A.J. asked.

Gray placed the papers facedown on the table. “Trust me. You've got this. I want you to give it your all. Remember the lines. They’re already in your head. You just need to tap into your memory and act your heart out. Get into character. Become Link.”

A.J. bit his lip, visibly nervous. It was one thing to read lines in front of a famous actor, Gray supposed, but another to actually act in front of him.

“How about I face away the first time?” he suggested. “Once you've been through, we can do it properly together.”

“Okay.” A.J. nodded, and when Gray turned around, he took a deep breath and launched into the first piece of dialogue.

They managed to make it through the full audition scene with only a few stumbles. When Gray turned back around, he could tell from A.J.’s expression that the kid was pleased with himself.

“You did good.” Gray resisted the urge to reach out and ruffle his hair. He didn't think A.J. would appreciate that. The boy wore his hair in a casually styled look that had probably taken ten minutes in a mirror to accomplish. “Now, let's do this face-to-face.”

A.J.’s lower lip trembled, but he sucked in a breath, puffed out his chest, and made a start.
